Arunachaleswara Temple -Thiruvannamalai


The Annamalaiyar Temple is located in Thiruvannamalai, at the foothills of the Annamalai Hills, the headquarters of the Thiruvannamalai District in Tamil Nadu. In the Gautama Maharshi Ashram, a demon named Mahishasurudu killed Mahishasurru, a demon named Mahishasurudu, with the intention of violating the allegiance of Goddess Parvati who was meditating for God. But Mahishasura was a great devotee of Lord Shiva so she repented and struck him with a sword in her hand on the top of the hill, where a Pushkarini formed. It is called Khadgapushkarini. She was submerged in that Pushkarini water and Karthika came out on the full moon day and appeared to everyone. Then as Mahishasura was carrying on his head, Parameswara appeared to her in the form of a linga, a large astrological form. That is why on the full moon day of Karthika, a great festival is celebrated here and a large torch is lit on the adjacent hill.

The Arunachal Temple dedicated to Tejolinga is the largest temple in the southern part of India. The temple is perched on a hill with magnificent walls and a large entrance. The temple flourishes with a thousand-pillar mandapam and an 11-story dome about two hundred feet high above the Lion Gate. There are four large air towers on all four sides. History has it that one of the air towers here was built by Sri Krishnadevaraya in 1560. The temple is spread over 25 acres and is adorned with 9 domes and 7 ramparts. The 217 feet high Rajagopuram is a magnificent view that showcases the craftsmanship of the sculptors of the time. The uterus comes if the three types are crossed. Along with other accompanying deities, Dakshinamoorthy and Natarajaswamy is also present here. Lord Sri Ramana Maharshi has been residing in this shrine for over 50 years while consuming this Swami. Ramana Maharshi lived in Thiruvannamalai and was buried there. The Ramana Maharshi was enlightened at the presence of the underworld inside the temple. Today this underworld house is a sanctuary inside the temple. This field vision is access to all sins and omniscience.

Giripradakshinam is very important in Thiruvannamalai. There are eight Shiva temples in the perimeter of the hill, which has a circumference of 12 km. On the day of Kartikadeepam, every house is ablaze with lights as if we were lighting lamps for Diwali in every house. Brahmotsavam is held four times a year at this shrine. These Brahmasthas, which last for ten days, end on the day of Karthika Deepam. Karthika Dipotsavam is celebrated on the full moon day of Karthika. A chariot festival is organized on this occasion. The Thiruvannamalai chariot is a very large chariot. Every full moon night, thousands of devotees roam around Arunachalakonda to worship Lord Shiva. Although a theological teacher, Lord Ramana Maharshi lived in Thiruvannamalai for 53 years and passed away in 1950. His ashram, Sri Ramana Ashram, is located at the foot of Arunachalakonda, west of the city.
