Kukke Sri Subrahmanya Temple

Subramanya is located at a distance of about 100 km from Mangalore, amidst dense forests, amidst the foothills of the Western Ghats on the fruitful edge of the state of Karnataka. It was a small hamlet formerly known as Kukke town. Gradually it is called Kukkesubramanya. It is famous as one of the Parasurama Kshetras. Devotees visit this shrine, which is home to Kumaraswamy. According to a local legend, Kumaraswamy was anointed by the Anadu deities on Kumara Parvat. There are several accounts of the name Subramanya for this field. Kukkai means basket in Kannada. It is said that this shrine was earlier known as Kukkai due to the presence of Shiva lingams in a basket before the formation of this shrine. According to another account, Kukshi in Sanskrit means stomach. The interior of the house is also called Kukshi. It is said that Devasena Samata Subramanyaswamy became an element in Vasuki and later appeared in a cave here, praising Vasuki for his penance. There is also a story that a resident installed a Shivalinga inside the house. Locals say that the kukshi has become a kukkai over time. The name of the Swami in this hanging temple is Subrahmanya. Hence the name Subramanya came to this town. In this temple, Skandashashti is observed on the day of Margashira Shuddhasashti which falls according to the lunar calendar. On this day, the main festival of the temple is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony. The locals believe that the Lord in this temple has the power to cure all ailments.

On one side of the Subramanya temple is a small stream called Dhara Nadi. Many devotees bathe in this stream and get cleansed and visit the Swami in the temple. Prajapati Brahma had two wives named Vinata and Kadruva. Vinuta's son Garutmantu. Nagru, a native of Kadruva. One day, while the two Kadruvas are wandering in the forest, the two make a bet together and the strange one loses due to cheating and becomes a slave to Kadruva. The deception that has been raging for a while will come out. Garutmantu killed the snakes in retaliation for the work of the maid who unjustly took his mother. One day, when he sees the resident, he grabs the resident and kills him. Then Kashyapa Maharshi escapes and Garutmantu leaves Vasuki with respect to Kashyapa's words. Kashyapa feels sorry for the resident who is all over the place and says that it would be better for him to live with him in the field where you are in Dharatirtha. Then the resident settled there and meditated. Shankara appeared to him and said, "Stay here."

My son used to come here and live with you. The field is said to be famous by name. He himself erects a Shivalinga filled with his element and bestows a gift that will cure all ailments for those who come here and visit you. Thus, the idol of Lord Shiva that is not allowed to fall in the temple is called Kukke Lingam. Shortly afterward, Kumaraswamy was born, killed Tarakasuridi and his younger siblings with his scepter came to Dharatirtha and washed his scepter with the water of this river. Therefore, devotees believe that if they bathe in this Tirtha and consume this Swami, all their sins will be washed away. So, while bathing in this river, Vasuki came to Kumaraswamy, bowed to Kumaraswamy, and told him what God had said. Knowing this, Kumaraswamy rejoices and invokes a part of his content here and promises that the devotees who have come to serve him before will also drink Vasuki. Kumaraswamy is seated on a peacock vehicle on top of the idol in the temple. Obeying the orders of his father Jamadagni, his mother Renukadevi beheaded Parasurama, who came here, bathed in this Dharatirtha, and was freed from maternal murder. Therefore, the devotees believe that if they visit this shrine, bathe in the river and serve the Lord here, they will get rid of all their sins and all their diseases. In the sanctum sanctorum, there is Subramanyaswamy at the top of the Moolaviratha, Vasuki at the center and Adiseshu at the bottom. A great chariot festival is held on the day of Makar Sankranti for the lord of this temple. Here for those who suffer from chronic diseases, a ritual called Sarpasanskaram is performed for the prevention of snake bites. After the purification, the snake is cremated, the sutta is performed, and the tarpans are released.
